As busy mums, we always look for ways to do things efficiently. So today, I’m going to share with you a time-saving step in meal preparation that I like to do. A procedure that even the famous chefs around the world practice.
What is this method that will make your cooking adventure easier?
Mise enplace pronounced as “MEEZ ahn plahs” is a culinary term that was derived from a French expression that means “everything in place”.
This means that before I start cooking, I like to make sure that everything that I need is just within reach.
How do we do mise en place?
First, we need to check the recipe. Get the ingredients that you’ll be needing and place them in separate bowls. Make sure that you already have the correct measurement of your ingredients before putting them in small bowls.
Next, arrange all the ingredients on your kitchen counter. The first one that you’ll be needing will be placed closest to you, followed by the second ingredient, the third and so on.
Why should we do mise en place?
It’s going to save you time because you can easily see if you’re missing celery, broth or bell pepper if you have prepared everything in front of you.
For ingredients that need to be boiled or blanched, like carrots, potatoes. You can prepare them before you embark to the actual cooking of the dish.
There are times when you need to cool ingredients first (like gelatin) before adding to your recipe. So you can arrange the other things that you need and by the time need your special ingredients, it has already cooled down.
Aside from that, it makes complex recipes simple and fun to do since you don’t have to do several things all at the same time.
These steps are easy to do and will shorten the time that you need to spend in the kitchen.
