My Top Tips in Steaming With Your V Stacker

My Top Tips in Steaming With Your V Stacker

Of all the conventional cooking methods, steaming is one of the most natural and healthy ways to cook the food you eat; it’s a simple technique that allows you to experience the unique flavours of the food itself.

Now, if you are new to steaming in your Varoma®, these are my top tips for success!

Cook food by steaming is a moist-heat method of cooking that works by boiling water which vaporizes into steam; it is the steam that carries heat to the food, cooking it. There are a few ‘tricks’ to steaming that I would love to share with you.

⚫ I recommend mastering steaming one type of food at a time. Whether that is a vegetable or meat. Different foods will take different amounts of time to steam. Once you are familiar with how long your potatoes, corn, dumplings, or fish, for example, take to steam, then it will be easier to add in multiple ingredients when steaming.

⚫ Try to keep the size of the food you are steaming the same size. As it’s the actual steam that cooks food, your food will be cooked evenly if all pieces of potato, corn, meat, etc is the same size and thickness.

⚫ Always steam on Varoma temp so as you generate the maximum amount of steam from your Thermomix®. You have the choice of either boiling your water first in your mixing bowl or adding that time to the total steaming time. It takes roughly 9 minutes to bring a litre of water to the boil in your Thermomix®.

⚫ Food that is place closer to the centre of the flat tray and also closer to the mixing bowl will cook faster than food further away from the mixing bowl. This is important to remember when you are steaming a large amount of food like potatoes, corn, pumpkin, etc. I will redistribute the food midway through steaming – otherwise you will find that food that is sitting towards the edge of your Varoma® may be only partly cooked, while food in the centre is cooked.

⚫ Minimise the number of times you remove the lid from your Varoma®. Every time you lift the lid of your Varoma®, you are losing all of that steam that is cooking your food. I also like to double check the alignment of the V Stacker to ensure it is aligned with the Varoma®.

⚫ Ensure that the holes in your Varoma® are free so that steam can circulate throughout your Varoma®. This is especially important in the base of your Varoma® where the steam feeds directly in from the mixing bowl. I always use a Stainless Steel Trivet when I have food in the base of my Varoma®. It’s completely fine to use dishes and steaming papers in the middle tray of your Varoma® as there are steam holes on the sides of the middle tray.
