A Guide to Cooking with Fresh and Dried Herbs

A Guide to Cooking with Fresh and Dried Herbs

It’s undeniable that herbs and spices can add flavour and rich aroma when cooking your favourite meals. But there are times when a recipe calls for dried or ground herbs when all you’ve got are fresh herbs in your pantry.

Today, I’ll be sharing with you some tips on how you can easily get the right amount of fresh herbs and in place of dried or ground spices (and vice versa).

Rule 1:

Since dried herbs are more potent than fresh herbs, we’ll need smaller quantities of dried herbs when cooking. As a general rule for getting the right ratio for dried, flaky herbs such as dried tarragon and dried cilantro is…

🗸 3 parts fresh herbs to 1 part dried or…

🗸 1 Tbsp fresh herb =1 tsp dried herb

Rule 2:

And if you are working with a finely ground herb, such as ground rosemary or ground thyme, follow the ratios below:

🗸 1 tsp dried leaf herb is to ½ tsp of ground dried herb

🗸 1 Tbsp Fresh herb = ¾ tsp ground dried

Please remember that dried ground herbs and spices are much more potent compared to dried flaky ones, so you’ll be needing even less of them in your dishes.

Exemption:

In every rule that’s made, there is always an exemption. And although most herbs and spices can be converted with the ratio of 3 parts fresh to 1 part dried or 1 Tbsp fresh to ¾ tsp ground dried.

And to help you convert your favourite fresh herbs and spices, I have created a chart below that you can use
